Importants of Nilagiri :
Nilagiri was one of the princely states of Pre-independent India. This state was
established by a tribal chieftain named “Nilo Sardar” during the second half of 18th
century. So it is believed that the place “Nilagiri” is named after its founder Nilo
Sardar. Further, Nilagiri is the first princely state merged with Indian sovereignty after
independence. So the history of Nilagiri Contributes a glorious chapter to the whole
country. The eminent freedom fighter like Late Kailash Chandra Mohanty, Banamali
Das, Balaram Raj and others of this princely state took leadership and organized
mass agitation against the dictatorial rule of the then king Kishore Chandra Mardaraj
Harichandan (1925 - 1947) in particular and against the British rule in general. At
last the king was stepped down on 14th November, 1947.
The religious and socio-cultural scenario of Nilagiri is over-dominated by tribal
people. Because about 70% of its total population belongs to the communities of
Banavasis, Adivasis, backward classes, Un-privileged sections etc. The tourist spots
Panchalingeswar (Shiv temple), Bhudarchandi temple at Sajanagarh, Shree
Jagannath temple at Nilagiri etc. are situated within 8 kilometers radius of the
college. The Scenic forest sanctuary Kuldiha is an attractive spot of Nilagiri.
